Healthcare provider writing on a chart

When it comes to your healthcare, no one likes being left in the dark. We’re here to help you prepare for your upcoming oncology appointments by shining a light on some questions to ask when having conversations with your healthcare provider.

What to expect at your appointment

An oncologist is a doctor focused on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. They will work with you to provide the right resources and treatments to help you manage your illness and facilitate your recovery.

Your oncologist will get to know you and review your health history at your first appointment, which includes reviewing any scans you may have already had. They’ll discuss your symptoms and what led you to seek medical help. They will also go over any concerns and questions you may have about your diagnosis and outline next steps in your treatment process.

Questions to ask your healthcare provider

It can help to have some questions prepared to discuss with your oncologist before the appointment. These can include, but are not limited to:

  • What is the stage of my cancer?
  • What experience do you have treating my type of cancer?
  • When should I start treatment?
  • Where can I get a second opinion on my treatment options?
  • What is the overall goal of my treatment?
  • Where can I learn more about the medication you’re prescribing?
  • What are common side effects I might expect?
  • How might this medication affect my quality of life?
  • What are the next steps if my treatment doesn’t work?

How to best understand your oncologist’s advice

You’ll most likely be receiving a lot of information at your appointment. Here are some tips to help understand what’s being shared and help prevent information from becoming overwhelming:
